Aim training routines get all the attention, but the single biggest separator between low-rank and mid-rank players in any tactical shooter isn't raw flick accuracy — it's whether they pre-aim before peeking or react to what they see after they're already exposed. This skill is genre-agnostic, transfers across CS2, Valorant, Siege, and most competitive shooters, and almost nobody explains it in plain terms.

What pre-aiming actually means

Pre-aiming is positioning your crosshair at the height and location an enemy is statistically likely to appear before you round a corner or peek an angle — not moving your crosshair to find them after they're already visible. If you're consistently dying to players who "flicked faster," the real issue is usually that they were already aimed at your head before you appeared, while you were still moving your crosshair to acquire them.

Head-height is the default assumption

Most competitive shooters use a first-person camera at roughly standing head-height, so the default pre-aim position for any angle is head-level at the range you expect an enemy to be standing, not floor-level or center-mass. Crouch-spamming defenders and jump-peekers are exceptions you learn per-map and per-situation, but head-height is the correct default assumption until you have specific information otherwise.

Common angles are learnable, not guessable

Every map has a small number of angles that get held disproportionately often — chokepoints, common site-holds, popular flank routes. Spending time in a private lobby specifically practicing pre-aim at these known angles (not general aim training) closes more of the skill gap with better players than generic flick-training routines, because it targets the exact situation you'll face in a real round.

Slow peeks vs. fast peeks change your pre-aim strategy

A slow, controlled peek (leaning or strafing out gradually) lets you react to new information mid-peek, which is useful when you're unsure what's behind an angle. A fast peek commits you to your pre-aim before you have new information, which only works if your pre-aim guess is accurate. Mixing these deliberately — slow peeks when you lack information, fast peeks on angles you're confident about — beats defaulting to one style every time.

Why this matters more than sensitivity or crosshair settings

A player with mediocre mechanical settings who pre-aims correctly will out-duel a player with a perfectly tuned setup who's reacting after the fact, because pre-aiming removes the reaction-time cost entirely — you're already aimed at the spot before the duel starts. This is why coaches spend so much time on positioning and information-gathering rather than raw aim mechanics once a player is past the beginner stage.

Pre-aiming is a habit, not a talent, and it's learnable through deliberate practice on the specific angles you actually play rather than generic aim trainers. If you're stuck at a rank plateau despite solid mechanical aim, this — not a new crosshair or a higher sensitivity — is very likely the actual gap.
