RetroArch's power comes from being a frontend for dozens of emulator cores rather than a single-console emulator, but that same flexibility makes first-time setup genuinely confusing. Most of the friction disappears once you understand the order things need to happen in — most guides skip this and just list menu locations, which doesn't help if you don't know why you're clicking them.

Step one: cores before content, always

RetroArch treats each emulator (NES, SNES, PS1, etc.) as a separate "core" you download and manage independently. The most common first-time mistake is trying to load a game before installing the matching core — RetroArch won't know what to do with the file. Go to Online Updater (or Core Downloader on newer builds) and grab cores only for the systems you actually plan to play; installing everything just clutters the menu.

Step two: point RetroArch at your ROM directory correctly

Under Directory Settings, set your ROM directory once, and organize your files into per-console subfolders before importing — RetroArch's playlist scanner works far better with a clean structure (roms/snes, roms/genesis, etc.) than with everything dumped in one folder. Run "Scan Directory" from the Import Content menu afterward to generate playlists automatically, rather than manually loading each file through the core every time.

Step three: BIOS files for the systems that need them

PS1, Sega CD, and a handful of other systems require official BIOS files to boot games correctly — RetroArch can't legally include these. Source them from your own legitimately owned hardware or console if you're doing this properly, place them in the System directory RetroArch expects, and name them exactly as the core documentation specifies; a mismatched filename is the single most common reason "the game won't boot" after an otherwise correct setup.

Step four: shaders and filters, but sparingly

CRT shaders can make pixel art look dramatically more authentic, but applying a heavy shader on underpowered hardware tanks your frame rate, which matters far more for playability than visual fidelity. Start with a lightweight option like a simple scanline filter before jumping to a demanding shader preset, and only push further if your device has headroom to spare.

Step five: set per-core overrides for problem games

A handful of games need per-core tweaks — a different aspect ratio, a specific save type, adjusted audio latency — to run correctly. RetroArch supports per-game configuration overrides specifically for this, so you don't have to change global settings and break every other game on that core. This is the fix for "everything works except this one game," which is a far more common situation than broken global settings.
